While these models feature bolt-on neck construction rather than the set-neck design found on higher-end models, they retain much of the character, feel and sound associated with the iconic Gibson originals, offering excellent value in the £200–£300 price range.

Roland "Cube" Series Guitar Amplifiers

The CUBE-10GX is an excellent amplifier for home practice, offering clean and overdrive channels, EQ controls, and built-in effects such as delay and reverb, allowing players to achieve a richer sound without the need for additional pedals.
Known for their solid build quality and natural, responsive tone, Roland Cube amplifiers provide an immediate playing feel. Compared to some modern digital amplifiers, which can occasionally feel less responsive due to complex signal processing, the Cube series is often praised for its fast and natural response.
Although some models in the series, such as the Cube 30, 40 and 60 (X/XL), have been discontinued, they are commonly available on the second-hand market at reasonable prices. Their sturdy construction also means many older units remain in excellent working condition.
Harley Benton "HB" Series Guitar Amplifiers
Harley Benton is Thomann's own brand, known for offering musical equipment at highly affordable prices. The HB series solid-state guitar combos provide all the essential features needed for home practice, including clean and overdrive channels, EQ controls, auxiliary input and headphone output.
For beginners and developing players, I would particularly recommend the HB-20R or HB-40R. Both models include built-in reverb, adding depth and richness to the sound without the need for additional effects pedals.
Yamaha THR Series Guitar Amplifiers
The Yamaha THR series is a range of compact, high-quality digital amplifiers designed primarily for home practice and recording. Despite their small size, they offer a wide variety of amp models, built-in effects and useful connectivity features. Their modest volume makes them particularly well suited to bedroom musicians and players who wish to practise without disturbing family members or neighbours.
Although they are priced above most entry-level amplifiers, the THR series is widely regarded for its exceptional sound quality, responsive playing feel and premium build quality. A distinctive feature of the range is its stereo speaker system, which provides impressive depth and clarity when playing backing tracks, music or recordings through the amplifier, making practice sessions more enjoyable and immersive.
Based in Slovenia, Flight Ukuleles has earned a strong reputation for producing innovative, high-quality and visually appealing instruments. Designed in collaboration with legendary bassist Marcus Miller, Sire basses have gained a strong reputation for offering exceptional value for money. Built in Indonesia, they feature impressive build quality, comfortable rolled fretboard edges and versatile active/passive electronics typically found on much more expensive instruments. Even many of the higher-end models remain competitively priced while offering premium features and materials.
Most Sire models are equipped with an 18-volt 3-band preamp and an active/passive switch, providing a wide range of tonal options directly from the instrument. Passive models are also available for players who prefer a more traditional sound and simpler electronics.

Scale Length Note:
Before purchasing bass strings, check your instrument's scale length carefully. Different manufacturers may define short-, medium- and long-scale sets differently, so always refer to the manufacturer's sizing guide to ensure a proper fit.

Capo Selection:
For classical nylon-string guitars, choose a capo with a **flat radius** to match the fingerboard. For most steel-string acoustic and electric guitars, a **curved-radius** capo will provide a better fit and more even pressure across the strings.
